Exploring the Metaphor

  • What characterizes a bridge and why do we use it to represent an approach to easing this cultural dilemma? The purpose or function of “bridges” in both the metaphor and this application is to enable “flow” and “exchange,” back and forth between the separated. Our attitude here (see “attitude” entry elsewhere in this website) is to respect and to enable communication above all, and to value not demonize the positions of the separated. Bridges can only be stable when they have firm foundations on both sides of the separated gorges and these attitudes are the necessary foundations to anchor both sides of the bridge. [47F/W’13]
